Book excerpt: The Snowlygaster By Donna Tisdale Once a long time ago, beyond the two bluest mountains on the horizon, down Misty Lane that led between two giant hemlock trees, there lay a beautiful meadow. And in this meadow there lived a Snowlygaster. He was as big as a house, as high as a house, as long as a house, and as wide as a house. Never was there another animal as big as the Snowlygaster. He had two heads! One like a horse's head with soft brown eyes and a flowing white mane. One like a dragon's head with flashing blue eyes and covered with green scales. This head breathed fire from its nose and mouth. No animal was ever kinder than the Snowlygaster’s horse head. And none was ever more ferocious than the green dragon head. Now the Snowlygaster had eight legs, four like a horse's legs, and four like a dragon's legs. When he drew up his dragon legs and ran on his horse's legs, he could go faster than the wind. But when he drew up his horse's legs and stood on his dragon legs, the wind stopped. The earth held its breath. So powerful was the Snowlygaster on his dragon legs that he could lick any beast that lived then, or lives now, or ever will live!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Piligian's word crafting explores widely polarizing elements of the human psyche. In his first novel, "Killer," he presented his readers with a bone-chilling story of a serial killer gone haywire in a small mountain town. Now, in his latest work, Looking for Love, Lost, Piligian explores the complications of romance, the twists and turns that lovers experience in their search for happiness, the emotional rollercoaster that flings them up toward the heights of fulfillment before sending them plummeting into chasms of treachery and emotional sadism. Andrew Piligian taught history and literature in Los Angeles' inner city for years, bringing enlightened actualization to entire generations, lessons which they promptly forgot. Now, he fishes, reads, experiments with recipes, and enjoys living in his mountain retreat, dipping his pen into the inkwell, crafting fictional worlds and ignoring humanity's halfhearted declarations of reality.

It is also the story of Rick Stevens search, despite his sexual hang-ups, for the ideal wife.  Kert von Fielding was in her mid thirties when she made her first voyage aboard the MS Gripsholm, sailing from Helsinki, Finland, to New York City.  Kert had majored in languages at Helsinki University where she earned both a B.A. and an M.A., and had later worked as a translator. She knew five langagesFinish, Swedish, English, French, and German. She hoped someday to obtain translating work in New York City.  But this first time in the states, she visited her cousins in Salem on the Lake, a small town in Ohio on the banks of Lake Erie. While there, she made the acquaintance of Mart Appleby, ten years her junior, and the son of the highly esteemed and supposedly wealthy Municipal Court Judge of the townCalvin W. Appleby II. Their friendship, during the summer of 1957, ripened into an intense love affair, involving a lot of sex. She fell madly in love with Mart Appleby and thought he loved her in return. She was mistaken, but she kept sending him love letters after he went to the West Virginia Institute of Technology where he was employed as a psychology/sociology assistant professor.  Mart did not answer any of Kerts letters. Then, failing at this affair, she turned to his older half- brother,Rick Stevens, who was closer to her age, five years her junior. Rick was interested but wary. She discussed with him her plan to become an American citizen by marrying an American.  Rick, a new high school science teacher, was conservative and not nearly as daring as his younger half-brother Mart. Kert definitely preferred Mart as a mate instead of Rick. But shed marry Rick as a means to an endobtaining her citizenshipand then leave. She figured she could hide in New York City.  When her VISA expired she returned to Helsinki, Finland. While there she wrote numerous letters to Rick, finally writing lovey-dovey type letters. She told him she would return to visit.  She returned to New York City the next year aboard the MS Gripsholm. During the seven-day passage she had a shipboard romance with a handsome and congenial man in his mid thirties, Chad Power, an assistant professor of English at Hunter College in NYC and the son of a multimillionaire.  Without giving away any more of the story, suffice it to say that Kert, using sex and her feminine wiles and machinations, managed to be married to two handsome virile men at the same time, without either of them being aware of her duplicity, and to obtain her citizenship twice.  Did Kert ever become rich? You will need to read the book to find out. And, please dont skip around.

Book excerpt: 100 EXTRAORDINARY STORIES ABOUT ORDINARY THINGS SIGNIFICANT OBJECTS: A Literary and Economic Experiment Can a great story transform a worthless trinket into a significant object? The Significant Objects project set out to answer that question once and for all, by recruiting a highly impressive crew of creative writers to invent stories about an unimpressive menagerie of items rescued from thrift stores and yard sales. That secondhand flotsam definitely becomes more valuable: sold on eBay, objects originally picked up for a buck or so sold for thousands of dollars in total — making the project a sensation in the literary blogosphere along the way. But something else happened, too: The stories created were astonishing, a cavalcade of surprising responses to the challenge of manufacturing significance. Who would have believed that random junk could inspire so much imagination? The founders of the Significant Objects project, that’s who. This book collects 100 of the finest tales from this unprecedented creative experiment; you’ll never look at a thrift-store curiosity the same way again. Book excerpt: In 1982 Pine River, Georgia, the summer plans of twelve year old Starr Ravenel and her running buddy, Tommy Lee Bledsoe, are soon dashed when a terrible pall is cast over their town. An apparent psychopathic killer of young red-headed women has now deposited the body of his third victim in a dumpster in the heart of town. But he is not through. To the horror of the townsfolk, he strikes again, leaving yet another uncanny calling card on the body. This time the victim is one of their own. Starr's father, Blake, a town icon, is Pine River's police chief. As he collaborates with State and Federal law officers to hunt down the killer, suspects continue to pop up, the most likely of which is a middle-aged recluse ironically living next door to the Ravenels. Starr, a passionate, precocious child and a student of Astronomy, scans the heavens nightly with her telescope while also keeping a watchful eye on her eccentric neighbor. Like a ghost from out of the past, a mysterious diary falls into Starr's hands and its contents not only provide clues that will lead directly to the killer, but splits the town wide open.
