Book excerpt: When David Matthews began to research the strange underworld of boxing, he found that many were reluctant to talk to a writer looking for colour pieces without really understanding the sport. So he decided take them on at their own game and began a two-year training programme so he could have one professional fight. LOOKING FOR A FIGHT is Matthews' story of his own battle for fitness, the difficulty of learning how to punch properly and how to take a punch. Above all, he reveals what really motivates the characters that he worked and trained with. What makes someone risk their life for a purse of a few hundred pounds? Why do so many boxers believe that God is on their side? Is boxing a force for good in our society? This is a remarkable account of boxing from within and without.

Book excerpt: In his 2005 bestseller, The Republican War on Science, journalist Chris Mooney made the case that, again and again, even overwhelming scientific consensus has met immovable political obstacles. And, again and again, those obstacles have arisen on the right—from the Bush administration, from coalitions of Republicans and from individually powerful Republicans. As the new paperback edition announces, Mooney’s book, “brings this whole story together for the first time, weaving the disparate strands of the attack on science into a compelling and frightening account of our government’s increasing unwillingness to distinguish between legitimate research and ideologically driven pseudoscience.” Looking for a Fight: Is There a Republican War on Science? started life as a ‘book event’—an online, roundtable-style critical symposium on Mooney’s work, hosted at Crooked Timber (crookedtimber.org). Eight contributors offered reviews, discussion and critical commentary. And Mooney responded to his critics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on extended interviews at the Culiprán fundo in Chile with peasants who recount in their own terms their political evolution, this is an in-depth study of peasants in social and political action. It deals with two basic themes: first, the authoritarian structure within a traditional latifundio and its eventual replacement by a peasant-based elected committee, and second, the events shaping the emergence of political consciousness among the peasantry. Petras and Zemelman Merino trace the careers of local peasant leaders, followers, and opponents of the violent illegal land seizure in 1965 and the events that triggered the particular action. The findings of this study challenge the oft-accepted assumption that peasants represent a passive, traditional, downtrodden group capable only of following urban-based elites. The peasant militants, while differing considerably in their ability to grasp complex political and social problems, show a great deal of political skill, calculate rationally on the possibility of success, and select and manipulate political allies on the basis of their own primary needs. The politicized peasantry lend their allegiance to those forces with whom they anticipate they have the most to gain—and under circumstances that minimize social costs. The authors identify the highly repressive political culture within the latifundio—reinforced by the national political system—as the key factor inhibiting overt expressions of political demands. The emergence of revolutionary political consciousness is found to be the result of cumulative experiences and the breakdown of traditional institutions of control. The violent illegal seizure of the farm is perceived by the peasantry as a legitimate act based on self-interest as well as general principles of justice—in other words, the seizure is perceived as a “natural act,” suggesting that perhaps two sets of moralities functioned within the traditional system. The book is divided into two parts: the first part contains a detailed analysis of peasant behavior; the second contains transcriptions of peasant interviews. Combined, they give the texture and flavor of insurgent peasant politics.

I’ve grown up listening to thousands of tales, handed down from generation to generation. Once in a while a family member might experience a new adventure that would then result in a new tale being shaped and shared with family and friends. Many of my tales are humorous adventures, full of life’s twists and turns. Some delve into the depths of human emotion. Most are factually true, while others may be slightly embellished with an angle or two to add a bit of intrigue. I am not a bold liar, crook, nor thief, but as with storytellers of old, it can be a bit of a challenge to separate the fact from the fiction. That part I will always leave up to you, the reader. I promise to never cheat you with a boring tale, nor steal your valuable time with vulgarity or gossip. I guarantee at the very least a smile, while striving for the ultimate belly laugh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helicopters patrolled low over the city, filming blocks of burning cars and buildings, mobs breaking into storefronts, and the vicious beating of truck driver Reginald Denny. For a week in April 1992, Los Angeles transformed into a cityscape of rage, purportedly due to the exoneration of four policemen who had beaten Rodney King. It should be no surprise that such intense anger erupted from something deeper than a single incident. In The Contested Murder of Latasha Harlins, Brenda Stevenson tells the dramatic story of an earlier trial, a turning point on the road to the 1992 riot. On March 16, 1991, fifteen-year-old Latasha Harlins, an African American who lived locally, entered the Empire Liquor Market at 9172 South Figueroa Street in South Central Los Angeles. Behind the counter was a Korean woman named Soon Ja Du. Latasha walked to the refrigerator cases in the back, took a bottle of orange juice, put it in her backpack, and approached the cash register with two dollar bills in her hand-the price of the juice. Moments later she was face-down on the floor with a bullet hole in the back of her head, shot dead by Du. Joyce Karlin, a Jewish Superior Court judge appointed by Republican Governor Pete Wilson, presided over the resulting manslaughter trial. A jury convicted Du, but Karlin sentenced her only to probation, community service, and a $500 fine. The author meticulously reconstructs these events and their aftermath, showing how they set the stage for the explosion in 1992. An accomplished historian at UCLA, Stevenson explores the lives of each of these three women-Harlins, Du, and Karlin-and their very different worlds in rich detail. Through the three women, she not only reveals the human reality and social repercussions of this triangular collision, she also provides a deep history of immigration, ethnicity, and gender in modern America. Massively researched, deftly written, The Contested Murder of Latasha Harlins will reshape our understanding of race, ethnicity, gender, and-above all-justice in modern America.

Book excerpt: On 24 November 2012, four-time World Champion boxer Ricky Hatton dropped to his knees, felled by a sickening punch to the body in his first comeback fight in almost three years. Gasping for breath, down and out, it was then that something extraordinary happened: 20,000 fans began to sing his name. Ricky Hatton: War and Peace is the story of one of British boxing’s true icons. From a Manchester council estate to the bright lights of Las Vegas, Ricky Hatton experienced incredible highs in his career, including one of the greatest ever wins by a British boxer, over the IBF Light Welterweight champion Kostya Tszyu. But heavy defeats to two legends of the ring, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, brought him quickly down to earth to face a new set of battles against depression, drink and drugs. Written with his trademark honesty and wit, this is the inspiring story of a charismatic, funny, straight-talking fighter who boxing fans have always taken to their hearts; a man who has survived a lifetime of wars both in and out of the ring, and who only now is finding something close to peace.

No, it wasn’t a lifelong disease or some crippling addiction I was trying to beat either. But, in a way, I guess you could say it was. My battle only got harder and 10 times more complicated when I met a Nixon. Then it got even worse when I met the rest of the Nixon clan. While I wouldn’t say that my life was normal before I met William Nixon, I was actually trying to make it that way. I was trying to distance myself from what I’d wrapped my whole life around. But one mistake – one stupid decision to go back to the warehouse – undid two years’ worth of hard work. Now I was back to where I started – addicted, bloodied, crippled, and diseased. Only, I wasn’t really. That would mean I was home and in reality I was the furthest thing from it. If I were home that would mean most things would be back to the way they were. But they weren’t. They couldn’t be. There was only one thing that always seemed to stay the same. The place I could never escape. The place that drew me back time and time again. The warehouse. All I can say though is fighting only gets you somewhere. And I learned that the hard way.
