Book excerpt: Emma Vaile is the most powerful ghostkeeper in centuries. Which is great when she's battling the wraith-master Neos, but terrible when she's flirting with fellow ghostkeeper (and love interest) Bennett. When ghostkeepers fall in love, the weaker one loses all power, and that's something Bennett is not willing to accept. Heartbroken and alone, Emma tries to lose herself in school. A new team of ghostkeepers has arrived - one a snarky teen boy, the other a visiting scholar - and Emma finds solace in training for the battle against Neos. But as the team grows stronger, they are threatened by an unknown force. As chilling and page-turning as Deception, this sequel will grab readers and hold them to the last page. No one is safe from suspicion as Emma closes in on the traitor.

Book excerpt: Through attention to incidents of betrayal and self-betrayal in his fiction, this book traces the development of Conrad's conception of identity through the three phases of his career: the self in isolation, the self in society and the sexualised self. It shows how the early fiction negotiates the opposed dangers of the self-ideal and the surrender to passion; how the middle fiction tests the ideal code psychologically and ideologically; and how the late fiction probes sexuality and morbid psychology.

Book excerpt: Emma Hendricks is a strong, independent journalist known for getting at the truth. She has everything she’s ever wanted until her fiancé leaves her alone and devastated a few days before the wedding. She’s the “go to” girl for finding answers to unsolved mysteries, but even she can’t figure out what happened. Everything she believed in was a lie. Needing to get away, she heads to Beacon Bay--a small coastal town in Maine--for the summer. After finding an antique bottle wedged between two rocks in the ocean, she frees it only to discover there’s something inside. Breaking the bottle to retrieve her treasure, she cuts her hand. Kathleen Connor is the daughter of an artist mother and fisherman father, living in Beacon Bay during the 1940’s in a time of war. She should be happy with her lot as a school teacher, but she’s always felt she was meant for something more. After pressure from her parents, she finally marries with hope for a brighter future. Her husband runs the local store and has the respect of the community, but soon after their wedding, he begins to abuse her, turning her dreams into a nightmare. She runs away and becomes an outcast in a little cabin on the coast. Meanwhile, present day emergency room doctor and widower, Logan Mayfield, stitches Emma’s hand. She shows him a faded, yellowed map with a coded message written at the bottom and signed, Until Tomorrow, followed by the name Kathleen Connnor. Deciphering coded messages had been a hobby of his in college when he took an art history class and got caught up in hieroglyphs. Emma is the most interesting person he’s met in a while, but he can’t afford to be interested in anything but raising his son. His wife died six years ago from complications due to childbirth, but no one knows what really happened. In a place far away and decades ago, Joseph Henry Rutherford III is serving his country the best that he can. He comes from a wealthy family in shipbuilding, living in Beacon Bay as well. They choose the woman he is to marry, and he doesn't protest since he's lonely and sad after all the horrible devastataion he's witnessed. Needing to connect with someone, he writes a long, heartfelt letter to her but it's mistakenly sent down the coast to Kathleen's address. She tells him right away, but he doesn't care. The connection they form through letters creates a love they never imagined possible. When he returns from the war, they form a system of coded letters to secretly meet. Those are the letters Emma and Logan decipher to uncover what really happened and set the record straight. When Emma's past catches up with her, will she fight for what she really wants? Will Logan learn to forgive himself and take a chance on something real? Or will history repeat itself?

Book excerpt: The brutal lynching of two young black men in Marion, Indiana, on August 7, 1930, cast a shadow over the town that still lingers. It is only one event in the long and complicated history of race relations in Marion, a history much ignored and considered by many to be best forgotten. But the lynching cannot be forgotten. It is too much a part of the fabric of Marion, too much ingrained even now in the minds of those who live there. In Our Town journalist Cynthia Carr explores the issues of race, loyalty, and memory in America through the lens of a specific hate crime that occurred in Marion but could have happened anywhere. Marion is our town, America’s town, and its legacy is our legacy. Like everyone in Marion, Carr knew the basic details of the lynching even as a child: three black men were arrested for attempted murder and rape, and two of them were hanged in the courthouse square, a fate the third miraculously escaped. Meeting James Cameron–the man who’d survived–led her to examine how the quiet Midwestern town she loved could harbor such dark secrets. Spurred by the realization that, like her, millions of white Americans are intimately connected to this hidden history, Carr began an investigation into the events of that night, racism in Marion, the presence of the Ku Klux Klan–past and present–in Indiana, and her own grandfather’s involvement. She uncovered a pattern of white guilt and indifference, of black anger and fear that are the hallmark of race relations across the country. In a sweeping narrative that takes her from the angry energy of a white supremacist rally to the peaceful fields of Weaver–once an all-black settlement neighboring Marion–in search of the good and the bad in the story of race in America, Carr returns to her roots to seek out the fascinating people and places that have shaped the town. Her intensely compelling account of the Marion lynching and of her own family’s secrets offers a fresh examination of the complex legacy of whiteness in America. Part mystery, part history, part true crime saga, Our Town is a riveting read that lays bare a raw and little-chronicled facet of our national memory and provides a starting point toward reconciliation with the past. On August 7, 1930, three black teenagers were dragged from their jail cells in Marion, Indiana, and beaten before a howling mob. Two of them were hanged; by fate the third escaped. A photo taken that night shows the bodies hanging from the tree but focuses on the faces in the crowd—some enraged, some laughing, and some subdued, perhaps already feeling the first pangs of regret. Sixty-three years later, journalist Cynthia Carr began searching the photo for her grandfather’s face.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the face of seemingly relentless American optimism, Eugene O’Neill's plays reveal an America many would like to ignore, a place of seething resentments, aching desires, and family tragedy, where failure and disappointment are the norm and the American dream a chimera. Though derided by critics during his lifetime, his works resonated with audiences, won him the Nobel Prize and four Pulitzer, and continue to grip theatergoers today. Now noted historian John Patrick Diggins offers a masterly biography that both traces O’Neill’s tumultuous life and explains the forceful ideas that form the heart of his unflinching works. Diggins paints a richly detailed portrait of the playwright’s life, from his Irish roots and his early years at sea to his relationships with his troubled mother and brother. Here we see O’Neill as a young Greenwich Village radical, a ravenous autodidact who attempted to understand the disjunction between the sunny public face of American life and the rage that he knew was simmering beneath. According to Diggins, O’Neill mined this disjunction like no other American writer. His characters burn with longing for an idealized future composed of equal parts material success and individual freedom, but repeatedly they fall back to earth, pulled by the tendrils of family and the insatiability of desire. Drawing on thinkers from Emerson to Nietzsche, O’Neill viewed this endlessly frustrated desire as the problematic core of American democracy, simultaneously driving and undermining American ideals of progress, success, and individual freedom. Melding a penetrating assessment of O’Neill’s works and thought with a sensitive re-creation of his life, Eugene O’Neill’s America offers a striking new view of America’s greatest playwright—and a new picture of American democracy itself.

Book excerpt: “Visceral…a vital, heart-wrenching account of one teen’s harrowing experience.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) In the vein of The Way I Used to Be and Kelly Loy Gilbert’s Conviction, this “exceedingly well-written, powerful, and suspenseful” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) young adult novel follows a girl’s struggle to reconcile friendship, sexual abuse, and the secrets we bury deep down inside to survive. High school freshman Emma Clark harbors a secret—a secret so vile it could implode her whole world, a secret she’s managed to keep buried…until the day her best friend, Hannah, accuses Emma’s father of a heinous crime. Following her father’s arrest and torn between loyalty to Hannah and to her family, Emma is devastated to learn she must testify against Hannah’s word in order to keep her family together. As Emma wrestles with this impossible decision, her fractured past begins to resurface piece by painful piece—causing the line to blur between her present-day reality and the dark fairy tales she writes to survive, all of which threaten to expose Emma’s long-buried truths. The Secrets We Keep explores the complex, powerful bonds of friendship and family, asking the difficult question: At what point does Emma’s loyalty to another become a betrayal of herself? And perhaps the toughest question of all: Can Emma find the strength to finally unbury her secret?
