Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book of short stories almost all of which are romantic in nature. Each story elaborates on situations involving characters in age groups spanning teenage years, right up to late middle age. They involve the reactions to changes in life situations as people mature and respond to the influence of potential partners. The majority of tales have a happy ending, otherwise they are resolved in a manner satisfactory to the situation. The stories are, I believe, emotionally satisfying since they involve the reader in situations that are easy to relate to, even if the reader has never personally experienced anything like the content of the stories. The English expression is easy to read and understand, at the same time being interesting and evocative. It is ideal to read while travelling, or waiting for appointments, although I believe the temptation is to continue reading due to the appeal of the content and style of the tales. I believe that the strength of this literature lies in the quality of the opening paragraphs of each story which effortlessly carry the reader into the subject matter. The spoken words are realistic and contribute to the believability of the stories. Ideal as a gift, although this is primarily a book for women, men, too, can easily relate to and appreciate the stories. Several stories are, in fact, written from the point of view of the male character. My previous book "25 Stories of Life and Love in Australia" has received high praise from many readers.

Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK 'The Essence of Life and Love in Australia' is a collection of twenty-eight contemporary Short Stories, set in both city and country Australia. The book is diverse. Many stories are written in the first person, with the narrator being a man on more than a few occasions. There are plenty of romantic scenarios, many ending happily, others needing further resolution. The mood of the tales diverges from serious and reflective to light-hearted. I believe it's a 'feel good' book since, to me, it effortlessly transports ones thoughts away, engaging our emotions upon the characters and their fortunes, reaching a conclusion satisfying in one way or another. A special feature of my books is the wide spacings of words at carefully chosen places. The author's husband, Ronald Sharp B.E.M., the creator of the Grand Organ in the Sydney Opera House, has used his artistry to incorporate this to enhance comprehension, akin to breathing and pausing in singing. Since the stories are quite succinct, they are ideal to read in situations where time is strictly limited, such as waiting-rooms or while traveling. Because they delve into a variety of aspects of human nature, they shed light on personality, and the way of the world, I believe. The author's favourite stories from this book include 'Language of Love', a light-hearted tale of romance; 'At Seventeen', a tale of a young lady's infatuation with an older man; and 'My Daughter Sally', a father's account of his daughter's unrequited interest in a privileged local bachelor. If you are looking for an easy to read, mixed collection of (very) short yet satisfying stories, well-written and evocative, then I recommend you consider 'The Essence of Life and Love in Australia'.

Book excerpt: Bully . . . described in the Concise English Dictionary:"a browbeating person, esp someone who is habitually cruel toother weaker people;"intimidate with persistently aggressive or violent behaviour, orby using threats of violence;"These two descriptions are certainly true, but to the victims whohave so generously submitted their stories for inclusion in this book . . .they would barely be adequate. I have been one such victim. But my taleof woe is NOTHING compared with the humiliation, embarrassment, degradation and so much more that many of the people featured in thisbook have suffered, many still suffering. The suggestion of writing a book about bullying was put to me someyears ago . . . I cannot actually recall who did suggest it, or when, but itcertainly planted a seed in my mind. Research through those years hassuggested that many have written books before me, but no-one seems tohave actually devoted a book almost entirely to stories of victims . . . thiswas my goal. In communicating with these and other victims, both currentand past, I found that they all appeared to have the same message . . . justhow therapeutic it was to be able to . . . just talk about it . . . get it off theirchests. Of course, there are always the exceptions. Sadly, one particularvictim has been so badly scarred that he found it too difficult to write hisexperiences at all. And writing their stories will never change the fact that these people have been bullied. Many have had counselling, many havenot . . . many are still undergoing this. Some cases are far more serious thanothers . . . some have undergone the court process . . . others are still goingthrough this . . .The stories within these pages vary hugely . . . from supposedly minorcases through to some which are far some serious. But irrespective of theseverity of them, the effects on the victims have been horrendous. Manyhave made my blood boil.Doing this has given me a very small idea of just how mammoth thisproblem is and that it is EVERYWHERE. No-one is immune, nor is anyinstitution, any situation. It takes place at any age, any gender, any faith, anywhere, any time. Many of the victims were bullied in their teens and/or childhood, and some of these people were raised in the years prior to bullying beingrecognized and/or acknowledged. For some victims it is past tense, forothers a very current and continuing nightmare. Some stories have comefrom various work places. There are even a couple written by people whohave been bullied and have been bullies themselves. What has disturbed and infuriated me throughout (and believe me, Iwould NOT have wanted to have my blood pressure nor stress levels takenwhile doing this), something that does appear to be a common thread, particularly with the stories taken from schools . . . in seeking help, justiceand compensation through the appropriate channels, the education andlegal systems, in almost every case it appears that that the perpetrator/s is/are the ones who have been supported . . . NOT the victims. Most if notall schools maintain that they have a ''bullying policy'' in place . . . but givenall that is covered in these stories, and some of the outcomes, I do have toquestion . . . just how effective are these policies and who are they aimingto help?In one particular case, the victim lost her father, which was tragicenough in itself, but then . . . from what I can see, she was bullied . . . partlyfor this reason? Losing her father? WHY? What is the MENTALITYof bullies?A few of these histories are quite long and, as previously mentioned, some victims continue their fight for compensation and/or justice. I haveand do feel so much for the parents, families of the victims and for thevictims themselves. Overall from what I have learned, the attitudes of theschools leave me cold. I am not saying that this applies in all cases worldwide . . . goodness knows, those in the following pages are only the smallest drop in the ocean compared with the amount o

Australia—like much of the West—has undergone a veritable sexual revolution in attitudes and behavior. From early sex therapy to gay marriage, the juggernaut of late modern sexuality has significantly remade Australian social and cultural life. This collection brings together the work of leading historians of sexuality, to consider sixty years of remarkable sexual and social change. Acts of Love and Lust explores the ways both heterosexuality and homosexuality were constructed—by the state, through sex education, in medicine, by the law, political activists, and in the hands of the media. Just as importantly, contributors consider the ways sexuality was experienced, not as a monolithic or imposed institution, but how it was explored and enjoyed by individual bodies across different times and spaces. The authors examine the pleasures and pains of living in sexual bodies, and explore the manifest ways that love and lust shaped Australia’s society and culture.

Book excerpt: An orphan girl's epic journey to womanhood takes her across the world—and back to the man she loves—in this sweeping novel of early twentieth-century Australia. Western Australia, 1898. In the vast and unforgiving desert, a miner discovers a baby girl in the sand, miraculously still alive. Sent to an orphanage, Leonora is still mute with grief and fear as she slowly bonds with another orphan, James. He fights to protect her until both are sent away—Leonora to a wealthy American family, James to relatives who have emigrated from Ireland to claim him. Years later, Leonora is given a chance to return to her beloved Australia. There, in Wanjarri Downs, she will again come face to face with James, who's grown from a reticent boy into a strong, resourceful man. Only James knows the truth about Leonora—that her roots and her heart are here, among the gum trees and red earth. And they will fight to find a way back to each other, even as war, turmoil, and jealousy test their courage again and again. “A captivating story of love and the search for identity. A mesmerizing debut novel.” —Kristina McMorris, New York Times bestselling author of Sold on a Monday
