Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The passion of Paul Lee for Jesus drove him to write John: Loving Jesus and Keeping His Word. Here is one of the most profound reflections on the Gospel of John in our time. Thoroughly researched and written in Lee’s distinct voice, this is a book I wish I had on my shelves fifty years ago, and provides the kind of insight that will reach preachers, scholars, students, and anyone who wishes to learn more about the living Christ for years to come. (Dr. James B. Mooneyhan, Clergy, Atlanta Area of the UMC) The Gospel of John becomes alive anew with the reading of this book. Dr. Lee has compiled a contextual interpretation of the Gospel in a way that informs casual readers and yet challenges serious scholars and seminary students. This is an invaluable resource in sermon preparation, Bible studies, Sunday school lessons, or daily devotions. This work is so extensive, yet very understandable that it should be included in every serious student of the Scriptures! I highly recommend this book. (Rev. Dr. Philip D. DeMore, Former District Superintendent of the UMC) This book is the labor of a lifetime, as Paul Lee shares the fruit of decades of living with the Gospel of John, and for persons committed to serious study of the Bible. The title itself is a challenge as the aim of every Christian. My prayer for potential readers is that they will experience Jesus as “Lord and Teacher,” love him more dearly, and keep his word more faithfully. (Maxie Dunnam, Former President of Asbury Seminary, now Minister at Large, Christ UMC, Memphis, TN) The Gospel of John continues to be an inexhaustible source of Christian faith and theology. Paul Lee has given us a fresh, clear and faithful reading of John, combining chapter by chapter overviews, detailed commentary, and insightful practical reflections on John’s implications for Christian life and witness. This book is an excellent resource for pastors, teachers and anyone who desires a deeper encounter with the Johannine biblical text in relation to the New Testament. (Rev. Dr. Don E. Saliers, Candler School of Theology, Emory University)

The family of God is a place of being, belonging, and becoming; and relationship with the Triune God as Divine Parent is characteristic of value and dignity, provision and protection, transformation and maturation, purpose and calling. Not merely a series of events relegated to the past, the family of God is an ongoing, present phenomenon—a salvation-relationship into which God invites all peoples to be adopted, redeemed children of God.

This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Daughter Zion allegory represents a particular narrative articulation of the paradigm of bridal mysticism deriving from the Song of Songs, the core element of which is the quest of Daughter Zion for a worthy object of love. Examining medieval German religious writing (verse and prose) and Dutch prose works, Annette Volfing shows that this storyline provides an excellent springboard for investigating key aspects of medieval religious and literary culture. In particular, she argues, the allegory lends itself to an exploration of the medieval sense of self; of the scope of human agency within the mystical encounter; of the gendering of the religious subject; of conceptions of space and enclosure; and of fantasies of violence and aggression. Volfing suggests that Daughter Zion adaptations increasingly tended to empower the religious subject to seek a more immediate relationship with the divine and to embrace a wider range of emotions: the mediating personifications are gradually eliminated in favour of a model of religious experience in which the human subject engages directly with Christ. Overall, the development of the allegory from the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries marks the striving towards a greater sense of equality and affective reciprocity with the divine, within the context of an erotic union.

Using Carleen Mandolfo’s Daughter Zion Talks Back to the Prophets (Society of Biblical Literature, 2007) as a point of departure, the contributors to this volume explore the image of Daughter Zion in its many dimensions in various texts in the Hebrew Bible. Approaches used range from poetic, rhetorical, and linguistic to sociological and ideological. To bring the conversation full circle, Carleen Mandolfo engages in a dialogic response with her interlocutors. The contributors are Mark J. Boda, Mary L. Conway, Stephen L. Cook, Carol J. Dempsey, LeAnn Snow Flesher, Michael H. Floyd, Barbara Green, John F. Hobbins, Mignon R. Jacobs, Brittany Kim, Cheryl A. Kirk-Duggan, Christl M. The authors of this volume argue to the contrary: feminist and evangelical interpreters of the Old Testament can enter into a constructive dialogue that will be fruitful to both parties. They seek to illustrate this with reference to a number of texts and issues relevant to feminist Old Testament interpretation from an explicitly evangelical point of view. In so doing they raise issues that need to be addressed by both evangelical and feminist interpreters of the Old Testament, and present an invitation to faithful and fruitful reading of these portions of Scripture.

These questions have been asked and answered by many throughout the centuries, though rarely does the investigation span across the entire canon of Scripture. In this study Newkirk explores the breadth and depth of biblical teaching concerning God's mission for his people and the church's call to spread the gospel to the ends of the earth. By beginning with creation and ending with new creation, this study reveals that rather than simply deriving from a few "missions verses," the church's call to missions is grounded in the full spectrum of biblical revelation.
